Fundamentals of Surveying (FS)

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Effective immediately, the following applies to all (FE, FS, PE, and PS) applicants: PCS no longer accepts applications and work experience documentation by mail. Applications and work experience documentation received by mail will be returned to the sender.

  • Applications must be completed, scanned, and uploaded to your PCS Account.
  • All required work experience documentation must also be uploaded to your PCS Account.
  • Non-MLE comity applicants must upload all required work experience documentation directly to your PCS Account.
  • Official Transcripts sent electronically should be delivered in a secure method directly from your school/university to PCS: maeng@pcshq.com
  • Required Reference Questionnaire forms must be mailed directly to PCS. PCS will then scan the documents to the applicant’s account.
  • Please ensure that all the scanned documents are legible to ensure timely review. We will not accept .zip, .tiff, .txt, .xls, etc. ALL work samples must be .pdf format.

Massachusetts Application & Registration Process

First Time Candidates:

Step 1: Download and read your Candidate Information Bulletin.

Step 2: Create an Account with PCS if you do not already have one. You will receive an email from PCS once you have successfully created your account.

Step 3: Pre-register and pay for your Application after you have logged in if you have not already registered. PCS accepts Discover, Mastercard, and Visa.

! All Application Fees are non-refundable

Step 4: Download the Board Application for the SE and/or SIT Certification.

Step 5: Go to your account Home Page and upload your completed Board Application for the FE and/or EIT Certification.

  • First-time candidates submitting a FS Board Application to PCS must simultaneously register with NCEES for the FS CBT (Computer-Based Testing) examination at www.ncees.org. Candidates are not required to submit eligibility documentation until after they have successfully passed the examination and wish to apply for certification.

Step 6: Once PCS receives and approves the application, the candidates’ NCEES registration will be marked approved. After PCS approves the NCEES registration, candidates will receive an email from NCEES with instructions to schedule an examination date and location. (All candidates are recommended to read the “NCEES Examinee Guide” on the www.ncees.org website.)

Re-Exam Candidates:

Step 1: Re-exam candidates, please register with NCEES for the FS CBT examination. Once you have registered with NCEES, contact the Engineering Coordinator at maeng@pcshq.com to have your registration approved.

NOTE: Candidates will not be charged an additional PCS Application Fee for a re-exam if the candidate retests within six months of initial fail score date or one paper and pencil test cycle after the fail score date. If the candidate retest later than six months (CBT) or one paper or pencil exam test cycle, from initial fail score date and submission of PCS Application Fee, the candidate will be charged a Re-exam Eligibility Application Fee ($80.) Step 2: Once the eligibility fee has been received, the candidates’ NCEES registration will be marked approved. After PCS approves the NCEES registration, candidates will receive an email from NCEES with instructions to schedule an examination date and location. (All candidates are recommended to read the “NCEES Examinee Guide” on the www.ncees.org website.)


FS Certification Eligibility Requirements

  1. Once you have successfully passed the FS examination, you will be required to submit your eligibility documentation (transcripts, foreign evaluation, experience, etc.) to PCS for SIT certification. (If you tested under a different jurisdiction and now wish to receive certification in Massachusetts, please follow the first-time application process and include your eligibility documentation)
  2. Once this documentation is received, PCS will review your application and send you an email if you are approved for certification.
  3. PCS will email approved candidates instructions on how to pay for their SIT certification. After payment has been received, the certification will be issued and a wall certificate will be mailed to the MA Board for signature. Candidates will receive SIT certificates in the mail within 90 days.

Candidates may apply based on one of the following qualifications:

  • Holding a Bachelor of Science Degree in an approved curriculum (surveying or engineering degree with at least 18 hours of approved land surveying courses), with at least two years land surveying experience and with a minimum of one year in responsible charge of land surveying procedures under the supervision of a registered professional land surveyor.
  • Having two years or more of formal education comprised of at least sixty semester credit hours of which at least 18 credit hours are approved land surveying courses, with at least four years land surveying experience and with a minimum of two years in responsible charge of land surveying procedures under the supervision of a registered professional land surveyor.
  • Formal education does not comply with either of the above requirements for SIT certification; no certification will be issued upon successfully passing the fundamentals exam.

Note:  Candidates who do not have a US Social Security Number must contact the Internal Revenue Service and obtain an individual taxpayer identification number. Information can be found on their web site www.irs.gov or by calling 1-800-829-1040.


Massachusetts Engineering & Surveying Fees

FUNDAMENTALS OF SURVEYING (FS)

  • FS Board Application - $136
  • FS Re-Exam Eligibility Fee -  $80
  • FS Examination Fee - Approved candidates pay directly to NCEES (www.ncees.org)
  • Surveyor-In-Training (SIT) Certification Fee - $52
  • Wall Certification Fee - $25

*No re-exam fee will be charged if applicant retests within six (6) months of initial failed score date*

REFUND AND RESCHEDULING POLICIES

If you wish to cancel your examination and receive a partial refund for fees paid directly to PCS you must notify PCS, in writing, no later than the scheduling deadline. A $50 processing fee will apply to all candidates who cancel their examination. Refunds will be issued with-in 30 days after the examination. Fees are NOT transferred to future examination cycles for any reason.

Any withdrawal requests after the deadline will NOT be approved unless there is an extenuating circumstance. Proper documentation may be required such as military orders, doctor notes (for illness), a death certificate (for a death in the family), etc. Extenuating circumstances are NOT job related, vacations, lack of study time, weddings, etc. If you do not show up for the examination you will forfeit your fees and be required to pay the examination fee in full the next time you choose to sit for an exam. If you do not show up for your examination it is not counted as a failed score. It does not count against you in any way.
