Candidates will have two years (24 months from the date of completion to pass all required examinations and obtain a license.

Instructor Exam Attempt Limit : Pursuant to New Mexico law, if you are applying to take the Instructor Exam based on two years of current work experience or a Provisional License and fail any portion of the exam, you cannot retake the exam until completing a 1,000-hour Instructor Course at a Board Approved School. Upon completion, you must submit a new application to PCS and proof of completing these additional hours. Failing any portion of the instructor examination automatically voids the provisional instructor license.

Foreign candidates who meet the requirements set forth by the New Mexico Board may apply for a license by examination.
Note: The board requires examination applicants with foreign training who fail any part for the examination to register at a NM Board approved licensed school, submit to a scholastic evaluation to determine their training needs, and complete a minimum of 150 hours of remedial education. Upon completion and proof of the remediation, the applicant will be allowed to re-apply and examine on the failed areas. Translation is only required for documents not written in English.

Pursuant to New Mexico Regulation 16.34.2.8A(2)©, all required examinations must be taken and passed within 12 months of the date training was completed. After 12 months have passed from the date training was completed you will be required to reapply with the Board.
Pursuant to New Mexico Regulation 16.36.2.14(G) Any candidate who does not meet the minimum passing score after three attempts shall be required to enroll or re-enroll in an apprentice program.

You must become a registered user before completing an online application with PCS.

You must click the link in the e-mail to verify account information and create a PCS password, then click Enable Account.

Once you have created your PCS account, you can complete the online application. To do so, please follow the steps below:
You must complete the online application using your legal name – the name that appears on your current government-issued photo identification (i.e. Driver’s License).

You may check the status of your online application 24/7 by logging into your PCS account. As items are received, green check boxes will appear under the Application Approval Requirements section of the Active Applications box. If an application has been approved, a green check will appear in the Final Review Box under Active Applications.
You may reprint information concerning your examinations, payment receipts, and/or scores by logging into your Homepage.
Once you have completed your online application and made the payment, PCS coordinator will receive a notification to review it. The coordinator will then evaluate your application and identify any additional requirements that may be outstanding, such as a High School Transcript or a Training Transcript.
After reviewing the online application and any uploaded documents, the coordinator will notify you via email of any pending requirements. Your application will remain in pending status until all necessary information has been received. Once all documentation is complete, your file will be submitted for Board Review.
Following the Board's review and approval, applicants will be assigned to the next available practical exam date based on their Board approval date. You will also receive an email authorization to schedule your theory examination.

If you do not receive any e-mails within the time frame listed above, it is your responsibility to check your PCS account and reprint this information. If you cannot access your account, you must contact PCS at (888) 822-3272.
Once you have received your ATT letter(s), you must contact Iso-Quality (IQT), owned, and operated by Prometric, to schedule your theory appointment(s). Upon receipt of your ATT Letter, you must follow the specific directions listed on the ATT to take the examination(s). Log in to the website at www.IQTTesting.com. Select SCHEDULE/RESCHEDULE AN EXAM and follow the prompts given for each screen. You can also contact Toll-Free Telephone Support at (866) 773-1114 or email at SMT-OperationsTeam@prometric.com.
You may reschedule your theory examination without forfeiting your fee by contacting IQT at least six business days prior to your scheduled date. Fees will be forfeited if you attempt to reschedule in six or less days prior to your scheduled examination. Please call 866-773-1114 to cancel or reschedule your examination. If you cancel your exam the fees will be forfeited.
If you fail your theory exam and wish to reschedule, please wait until you have received your Official Score Notice from PCS by email before paying the rescheduling fee. Please allow at least 10 business days.
If you have missed, canceled, or failed an examination, please email cosandbar@pcshq.com to have the account reset for re-exam payment. You may reschedule online if you have failed an examination and received your official scores from PCS.
Please select TBD when completing your application. You will be assigned to the next available practical examination date once your application has been approved. You must be prepared to take the first available practical examination. You will be notified via e-mail of your practical examination date. If you are unable to take your practical examination on the date you are assigned, a rescheduling fee will be required.
You will not be permitted to reschedule or cancel your practical examination. Exceptions are made only for the following reasons :

In the event of inclement weather or similar emergency, a scheduled examination may be canceled or delayed. However, this decision is made only in rare instances and at the discretion of PCS and/or IQT. If a test center is open for testing, and you choose not to appear for your scheduled examination, your fee will be forfeited. You will have to reschedule your appointment and resubmit the appropriate fee to PCS. If you have reason to question whether or not a center will be closed due to an emergency, please call PCS to make inquiries regarding the practical examination and IQT for inquiries regarding the theory examination.
If you fail to bring these items, you will not be permitted to test, and a rescheduling fee will be required. No exceptions.
Both forms of Identification must be listed under the name to which you applied.

Student ID and employment ID are NOT acceptable forms of Identification. If you fail to bring proper identification or your names do not match, you will not be permitted to test, and a rescheduling fee will be required. No exceptions.
Arrival Time: You must arrive at the test center at least thirty (30) minutes before your examination start time for registration. If you arrive past your examination time, you will not be permitted to test, and a rescheduling fee will be required.

You may reschedule online if you have failed an examination and received your official scores from PCS. You may reschedule online with a credit card by logging into your Homepage.
Exam No Shows: If you fail to show up for your theory and practical examination at the scheduled time, do not have the proper identification (first and last name must match your admission letter), or do not have your PRINTED admission document, you will not be allowed to take your exam. You will be considered a "No-Show," your examination fees will be forfeited, and you will be required to re-register and pay all fees prior to taking the exam.
Suspected security breaches during either the theory or practical test administrations, such as an act of impersonation, creating a disturbance, giving or receiving unauthorized information or aiding other candidates, attempting to remove test information by any means, possessing prohibited materials or sharing supplies may be sufficient cause to dismiss you from the examination site or to invalidate or cancel your scores. Suspected breaches may be identified by observation or suspicion by the test center staff, or may be evidenced by subsequent statistical analysis of examination materials. PCS reserves the right to investigate each incident of misconduct and will report such incidents directly to the Board. The Board will make all final decisions on examination score invalidations or cancellations. No visitors, guests or children are allowed in the test center.
All test questions are the express copyrighted property of NIC. It is forbidden under federal copyright law to copy, reproduce, record, distribute or display these test questions by any means, in whole or in part. Doing so may subject you to severe civil and criminal penalties, including prison incarceration and/or fined up to $250,000 for criminal violations.
No food, beverages, purses, notebooks, magazines, backpacks, briefcases, hats, caps, reference books or electronic devices such as cameras, computers or computerized devices, iPods, radios, recording devices, portable fax machines, cellular telephones, watches, reproduction equipment. Smoking or the use of tobacco are strictly prohibited in the examination room. Failure to comply with any of these conditions will result in you being dismissed immediately and your actions reported to the proper authorities. PCS is not responsible for any personal items brought to the examination site.
Although every attempt is made to provide a quiet and comfortable test environment, noise and room temperature may be an unforeseen and unavoidable distracter. It is suggested that you wear the type of clothing that would allow you to adapt to a cooler or warmer climate at the testing site.
An unofficial pass or fail notice will be provided to you by IQT after you take the theory examinations. An official score notice for your theory and practical examination will be emailed to you at least 10 business days after your examination date. If you do not receive an email within this time frame, you may print a score notice by logging into your PCS account.
The minimum score required to pass the theory and practical examination is 75. If you fail an examination, PCS will provide a strengths and weakness report (at the bottom of the score notice) and information on re-applying online.
Once you pass the theory and practical examination, you will receive a Notice of Completion, including information on how to apply online for your license. See the License information below.
Body Arts-related professions and Instructors are only required to pass the theory examination.

The New Mexico Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists requires you to be examined on the following services for the practical examination. For the tasks, study guides, essential instructions, examination supplies, and references, please review your profession's latest Candidate Information Bulletin (CIB).
Aerosol Products : You are NOT permitted to use aerosol products during the examination.
Kit Size : Recommended kit size is no larger than 30” x 30”. For safety reasons, all kits must fit completely under the table areas.
Dress Code : You should dress professionally, as you would when working in a shop. Your name, your school name, or a shop name may not appear on your professional attire or kit.
